Wild Camping Yorkshire

Awesome lakeside camping spot for a camper van in the Yorkshire Dales

I hear you asking ……. “Where can I camp with my camper van that’s next to a lake, in a beautiful location with a stunning view, away from the crowds, where I’m allowed to light a fire and if it’s not too much to ask, a breathtaking view of the sunset or sunrise? ”

(Yes, this elusive location does exist.)

The answer: Lake Semerwater in Wensleydale, only 4 miles from Hawes in North Yorkshire and a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of a dreaded Caravan and Camping Club campsite! For a mere £5.00 per night you can camp on the edge of the lake. There are no marked pitches you simply pick your own spot which can literally be at the waters edge. A short walk up the hill takes you to Low Blean Farm where you can pay the farmer the small fee for camping. Incredibly you’re allowed a fire, as long as you’ve brought a fire pit (take your own wood as there isn’t any to be collected nearby).

Lake Semerwater can be subject to sudden changes in water level after heavy rainfall, so if you’re camper isn’t sporting the latest buoyancy aids, it’s probably best to check the weather forecast.  However pretty the second largest lake in North Yorkshire looks, it would quickly lose its appeal if it was flooding your beloved camper. If you position your campervan facing away from the lake this is the stunning view that you can enjoy from your bed. Lakeside camping at it’s best.

If you love wild swimming in the outdoors, canoeing, windsurfing or fishing then this place gets extra bonus points in your little black book of camping spots. The lake is open throughout the year for the braver campers who want to test the water temperature. Tickets for water activities can be purchased from Low Blean Farm. An absolutely stunning spot to park your campervan and camp. There’s of great walks in the area so don’t forget to take your Ordnance Survey Map. It’s only a 3 mile walk to Bainbridge where the Rose and Crown pub makes an excellent stopping place to quench your thirst before the beautiful walk back to Semer Water.
